Suitable for children aged 3 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: This is a wonderfully innovative game from Orchard Toys that is fun as well as educational, with lots of thought and detail in the design to keep your child fully engaged throughout!

Like all the Orchard Toys products, the game pieces are sturdy and durable to withstand plenty of child's play, and are brilliantly illustrated in vibrant colours to instantly capture young childrens' attention.

As the name suggests the game is based around a dinosaur track race, and consists of an oval sports track board (complete with cheering dinosaur spectators round the edge) which comes in several jigged pieces for your child to assemble prior to game play. A great little 'podium' is also included which can be placed in the middle of the track ready for the winners to receive their medals!

The game is designed for up to four players, and the running track is split into four lanes, one for each of the competing dinosaur characters that your child can choose from. Each dinosaur character is different in both appearance and colour, and each comes with a matching colour stand as well as their own starting position on the track (as indicated by the corresponding coloured arrow on the start line).

The game also includes a dinosaur 'spinner' which is divided into eight pictures of various dinosaurs doing sports activities (e.g. cycling, weight lifting, swimming etc.), and has not one but four arrow pointers (in the four corresponding character colours), meaning that on any one spin four different dinosaurs will be selected. These same dinosaur pictures appear on sixteen double-sided round 'dinosaur cards' (each card has a different dinosaur combination, but in total contain five identical pictures of six of the dinosaurs and one picture each of the remaining two dinosaurs). Together with the spinner, these cards will be used by players to detemine how many spaces they can move around the track.

To play the game, each player places their dinosaur on their starting position, and the dinosaur cards are shuffled and then spread out on the table. The players then take turns to spin the spinner, following which all players look to see which of the eight dinosaur pictures their coloured arrow has landed on. Players then pick up the corresponding dinosaur cards that are visible on the table, which they count up and use as the number of spaces they can move their dinosaur along the race track. These cards are then turned over and put back onto the table ready for the next turn. As only one side of the dinosaur card will be showing at any time, the number of spaces that a player can potentially move on one turn could be as many as five, or alternatively none at all!

The winner is the first player to cross the finish line and they can then place their dinosaur on the winner's podium and collect one of the lovely shiny gold medals that comes as a bonus with the game. Silver and bronze medals (just as shiny!) are also included for the players who finish second and third, and there are enough of each colour of medal to enable children to play up to four games in a row to see who can win the most gold medals.

The game is one of our personal favourites and besides being great fun to play, have many developmental benefits including promotion of basic concepts such as counting and matching, as well as encouraging plenty of social interaction, communication and turn-taking. The game also comes in a fun box with carry handle, and the instructions contain some udeful suggestions for adapting and simplifying the game to suit younger players.

BAD POINTS: None, other than there are lots of separate pieces which may be easily lost over time. Orchard Toys do however offer a very useful replacement service for any elements of their games (excluding puzzles) that do go missing!
