Official testerPRODUCT: Orchard Toys Match and Spell (www.orchardtoys.com)Orchard Toys Match and Spell

DESCRIPTION: A 2-4 player reading and spelling game for beginners based around word building. Includes 12 x double-sided 3-letter word boards, 8 x double-sided 4-letter word boards, 68 x letter cards and an instructions leaflet. Suitable for children aged 4 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: For children who have just started school, the Orchard Toys Match and Spell game is a simple interactive educational tool for practising and promoting confidence in letter recognition, word formation and spelling.

The game consists of a number of 3- and 4-letter word boards, with different written words printed on each (e.g. fox, pig, hat, drum, tent, crab). There are also a large number of letter cards which sit on top of the word boards and are used to spell out the written words.

The game is very versatile and can be played in two ways.

Game 1 is concerned with matching, sounding out and reading, with the aim of recognising and collecting letters in order to spell words. Players each choose a word board and place it with the written word face up. The letter cards are also spread face up on the table. Players take turns to match a letter card from the centre to the first letter of the word on their board, sounding out the letter as they go. Players must collect the letters in the order in which the word is spelt, and once a word has been spelt correctly, the player can (attempt) to read the word and then choose another word board to complete. Play continues until all the word boards have been used.

Game 2 focusses on sounding out and spelling phonetically, with the aim of correctly sounding out and spelling as many words as possible. Players each choose a word board and place it with the written word face down. The letter cards are spread face up on the table. Players take turns to sound out the word they are trying to spell and then look for the first letter of the word, from the cards in the centre, to place on their word board. When using the blank side of the word board, players must try to put letter cards down in the correct order to spell the word. Once a word has been correctly spelt the player can read the word aloud and can then choose another word board to complete. Play continues until all the word boards have been used.

The game comes in an attractively packaged box with a useful 'educational guide' on the reverse, and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are also some further suggested game variations depending on the the child's age and ability.

In our opinion this is a brilliantly simple yet effective game that encourages children to practise basic letter recognition and word building in a fun uncomplicated way.

BAD POINTS: None, other than there are lots of separate pieces which may be easily lost over time, as with any such game.
