PRODUCT: University Games Gruffalo Hide and Seek Mini Game (www.universitygames.com )University Games Gruffalo Hide and Seek Mini Game

DESCRIPTION: A 2-4 player mini board game based on The Gruffalo story, where players must 'race' to find where the Gruffalo characters are hiding. Contains 1 x game board, 7 x hiding character tokens, 18 x character cards, 4 x moving pieces, 1 x spinner, and instructions. Suitable for children aged 3 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: Based on the incredibly popular storybook by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, this new mini hide-and-seek themed game from the University Games range will be a real 'winner' among preschool fans of The Gruffalo.

The game consists of a small but really well made and durable fold-out game board, showing a beautifully illustrated and colourful background scene of 'the deep dark woods', and a criss-cross path of large and small circular board spaces connecting outwards from a central 'Start/Finish' position. The reverse of the board also displays a lovely scene from the Gruffalo story which children will instantly recognise and talk about.

The game also includes four sturdy shaped moving pieces, each displaying a cute double-sided illustration of 'the mouse' in differing poses, and set against different background colours to distinguish between players. In addition, seven 'hiding' character tokens which represent all the favourite characters from the story (i.e. The Gruffalo, the mouse, the snake, the owl, the fox, and a cute frog and butterfly), as well as a pack of illustrated character cards, and a colourful cardboard spinner numbered one to four.

To set up, the seven character tokens are shuffled and randomly placed face down on the seven large corresponding spaces on the game board. Each player selects a coloured moving piece (which slots into a plastic base to enable it to stand unaided) and places it on the 'Start/Finish' space. Each player is also dealt three character cards, face down, which determine which charaters they must search for on the board.

To play the game, players take it in turns to spin the spinner and move their play piece the corresponding number of spaces on the board, in whichever direction they choose. If they land on a yellow space then their turn ends and play passes to the next person. If however they land on a character token they can discretely turn it over and take note of the Gruffalo character it displays, placing it back in its original position.

Once a player knows the location of all three of their character cards, as well as the location of The Gruffalo himself, they must make their way back to the 'Start/Finish' space where they can then make their guess. If they guess correctly then they win the game, but if they guess incorrectly then they are out of the game and play continues among the remaining players until a winner is determined!

This is, in our opinion, a really fun and simple little game, with some great developmental benefits for preschoolers such as promoting number recognition, counting and memory skills, as well as encouraging social interaction, communication and turn-taking. The compact design of this product also makes it an excellent travel game to slip into a bag or suitcase.

BAD POINTS: None, other than, as with any such game, there are lots of separate pieces which may be easily lost over time.
