PRODUCT: Dr Brown’s Natural Flow Baby BottlesDr Brown’s Natural Flow Baby Bottles (www.drbrowns.co.uk)

DESCRIPTION: Polycarbonate anti-colic baby bottles designed to relieve colic, burping and wind through preventing air bubbles entering the child’s digestive system. They are available in Standard and Wide-Neck versions for both 120ml/4oz and 240ml/8oz sized bottles. In addition, a 60ml/2oz Preemie bottle is available in the Standard version for use with premature babies (Preemie teats are also available). Included with each bottle are a cap, teat collar, two-piece internal vent, Level-One silicone teat, travel disc, cleaning brush, and set of instructions.

GOOD POINTS: From our own experience as parents, the Dr Brown’s bottles do seem to reduce the amount of air swallowed during feeding, and therefore the amount of related burping and wind. The thing that sets these bottles apart from others is that you can actually see the difference for yourself – other bottles have a noticeable trail of air bubbles travelling back into the milk when your child is feeding, which is not apparent with Dr Brown’s bottles.

The wide range of bottles available allows you to cater appropriately for your child’s needs. The bottles feel robust and substantial to hold, and the Wide-Neck version has indents on each side of the plastic to make them easier to grip while feeding. There are more bottle parts to fit together than some other brands, however they are just as simple to assemble, and the instructions are clear and informative.

The bottle caps snap snugly on, and together with the white travel discs allow pre-prepared bottles to be carried out and about without any unwanted leakage. Each bottle comes with a small brush which is ideal for cleaning the smaller components, and all parts are safe to use in the dishwasher. In addition, the Wide-Neck bottles are compatible with other reviewed products, such as the Avent Express Bottle Warmer, the Avent Naturally Express Steriliser, and the Tommee Tippee Performance Plus+ Steriliser.

BAD POINTS: It is important not to screw the teat collars on too tightly as this compresses the rubber insert and prevents the pressure being released, thereby negating the effect of the bottle. The bottle has several components which make it slightly fiddly to wash by hand. In addition, the bottle parts may not necessarily fit securely onto the top rack of the dishwasher and can fall through during the washing cycle. Over a long period of usage, the rubber insert may crack through consistent sterilising and washing, however it is fair to say that the components are, on the whole, very durable and hard-wearing.

PRICE: Approx. £12 for pack of two 240ml/8oz Wide-Neck bottles; Approx. £6.50 for one 120ml/4oz Wide-Neck bottle.
