PRODUCT: Usborne - Children's Book of Baking Cakes (www.usborne.com)Usborne Children's Book of Baking Cakes

DESCRIPTION: An Usborne Books 64-page spiral-bound hardback cookbook containing a variety of cake recipes. Written by Abigail Wheatley, illustrated by Jessie Eckel. Designed for children aged 7 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: The Usborne Children's Book of Baking Cakes is part of a fantastic range of fun cookbooks aimed at encouraging children to cook, and is particularly suited to those with a sweet tooth!

This cookbook is most likely to appeal to young girls, and is packed full of recipes to bake all manner of delicious cakes. The book caters wonderfully for both novices and more experienced chefs, and includes lots of helpful information at the beginning of the book about 'getting started'. This covers, among other things, hygiene, oven temperatures and detailed 'baking basics' for your child to reference. In addition, the back of the book covers important information on food allergies and intolerances, and suggests how the cake recipes can be adapted to take account of this.

The contents of the book are divided into three sections of recipes - Little cakes, Tray cakes and Big cakes - which cover a huge range of fantastically yummy naughty but nice treats, including coffee cake, chocolate layer cake, cupcakes, muffins, mini cheesecakes, Swiss roll and cherry chocolate brownies.

The book has a hardback cover with thick card pages which are easy to flick through and turn over, and a clever concealed spiral binding enables it to lie flat on the counter top so that your child can easily follow their chosen recipe. Each page is full of fun colourful illustrations and appetising food pictures to captivate budding chefs, and the recipes are wonderfully written using simple ingredients and step-by-step instructions that are easy for young children to follow. There are also lots of useful hints, tips and advice throughout the book to help them perfect and vary their creations, as well as suggestions (and techniques) for decorating the cakes using a variety of cake toppings and finishing touches.

The book is mainly geared towards slightly older children who can read on their own, and a useful index at the back allows them to locate recipes quickly and easily. This is not to say however that younger children cannot still join in baking too, even if simply watching or following others (under the appropriate adult supervision!).

In our opinion, this is an affordable and incredibly well designed baking book which is crammed full of fun, interesting and educational content to enthuse and inspire even the youngest of children to cook...the perfect excuse to make a few nice treats for the family!

BAD POINTS: None that we can find!
