DESCRIPTION: From the Outwell Encounter tent collection, the Cloud 5 is a two room dome tent capable of sleeping up to five occupants. Features include detachable bathtub ground sheet, extended porch with two large windows, fibreglass poles, pre-attached inner tent, fully seam-sealed Outtex 3000 flysheet, pre-attached luminous guylines, toggle-up curtains, heavy-duty zips, and compact pack size. Storage bag included. Dimensions of pitched tent: approx. 360cm x 320cm x 185cm; dimensions of packed size: diameter 68cm x 19cm; weight approx. 8.9kg.

PITCHING: The Outwell Cloud 5 is simple to pitch, following a traditional pitching system, with the material of the tent supported by a fibreglass frame, with a groundsheet pegged out and a series of guylines to maximise stability. The inner tent is hung separately inside the main body of the tent, using the simple hanging point system (essentially hooked in through loops). The porch area has a detachable bathtub groundsheet which is fixed in a similar fashion. Packing away is simply a reverse of pitching which should take minimal time for experienced campers, and the instructions are easy enough to follow for beginners.

GOOD POINTS: The Cloud 5, as with all Outwell tents, shows incredible attention to detail in its design, especially considering the price point. It is lightweight, has a small pack size and an easy pitching system, making it ideal for weekends away with the kids.

As mentioned above, the pitching and packing away is very similar to other traditional pole-framed tents, which means it can be done quickly, making it ideal for families with younger children where time is of the essence! All of the accompanying guylines are day-glow yellow which helps them stand out to reduce trip-ups for all family members. Importantly, the zips for the outer and inner doors run freely and feel strong enough to withstand the attentions of even the youngest fingers.

The tent comprises two separate areas, a large porch area (140cm x 320cm) and a larger sleeping area (220cm x 320cm). The porch area is accessed through the main door (which has a waterproof zip), and has two adjustable vents for airflow and two windows with toggle-up curtains. It also has a detachable bathtub groundsheet which has a protruding lip that is ideal for wet weather camping.

The porch area leads into the inner tent that has a fixed sewn-in groundsheet and is separately attached inside the tent using the hanging point system as mentioned above. Along the sides of the inner tent are a number of mesh pockets for easy storage of, and access to, essential items. At the rear of the tent there is a further vent to allow for airflow through the tent that helps to significantly reduce the chance of any condensation forming.

The whole tent is covered in a waterproof flysheet made from heavy duty Outtex 3000 material (with fully taped seams), which is ideal for withstanding the great British weather and will keep you dry throughout.

The tent packs away into a durable zipped storage bag with handles for easy access and transportation.

In our opinion, the tent is finished to a very high standard, with excellent attention to detail (e.g. there is additional reinforcing material at potential stress points and mesh material has been used for housing the fibreglass poles which will reduce wind drag), and is ideal for short family trips. It is also worth mentioning that it seems very good value for money given the quality of the product, and we could see it lasting many trips.

BAD POINTS: The design of the front porch (as with a lot of smaller tents) means that if there is driving rain the door will have to stay shut to protect any gear in the porch. Additionally, as with most five-person tents, the sleeping space in the inner tent might just be a bit too cosy for five adults (or adult sized children), although Outwell designate it as being comfortably able to hold 4 adults (Outwell sleep-comfort rating of 4).
