PRODUCT: VTech Little Einsteins Learn & Go Laptop (www.vtechuk.com)VTech Little Einsteins Learn & Go Laptop

DESCRIPTION: An electronic laptop for children, based on the Little Einsteins television series, with rocket-shaped cursor mouse, 18 learning activities and games, and classical melodies. Requires 3 x AA batteries (included). Suitable for children aged 3 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: This is a great little learning system for any fan of the Little Einsteins series, and is based on the colours and design of ‘Rocket’. The laptop has a picture of the characters on the front and also an integrated Rocket-shaped mouse which clicks and moves in all directions. The laptop is very chunky in appearance and a perfect size for little hands. It is made from good quality plastic that will withstand rough usage, and it has a useful carry handle at the top for easy transportation.

On opening the flip-up lid, there is a small LCD screen, with a colourful surround of the Little Einsteins characters. The main keyboard is alphabetical, with nine piano keys underneath marked with Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do-Re. Above the keyboard is an ‘On/Off’ button, a ‘Volume’ button (controlled by repeatedly pressing until an appropriate level is found), and an ‘Activities’ button (to view the activities on screen).

There are four genres of activity: Letters (5 activities), Music (3 activities), Games (5 activities), and Numbers (5 activities). On turning the laptop on, a short animation will appear on screen accompanied by soothing classical music. Following this, your child will be asked to choose a game - the eighteen activities will scroll through automatically, or alternatively can be scrolled through more quickly using the mouse. Once the chosen activity appears on the screen, it can be selected by clicking down on the mouse – the activities are mixed in the order in which they appear.

Each activity has simple on-screen animations and the laptop provides clear oral instructions for each, so that your child fully understands what they must do (instructions on each activity are also described in the user manual). The letter buttons and piano keys can be used to answer questions dependent on the activity. A great feature is that the piano keys will also play notes if pressed during unrelated piano activities too. A useful 'Repeat' button on the bottom of the keyboard allows your child to have the instruction or question repeated.

This is a great learning system from VTech, which is extremely educational. The activities teach your child about basic concepts of letters, numbers, vowels, memory skills and logic, as well as creative music and simple computing skills. There is plenty of classical music between and during games, and applause to encourage your child when they answer a question correctly. The laptop also usefully has an automatic shut-off function after several minutes of inactivity to save on battery life.

BAD POINTS: Nothing serious, although you must scroll through the activities each time you want to change a game. The laptop is battery operated, therefore batteries may need to be changed frequently with heavy use. Rechargeable batteries can however be used to save on cost.
