PRODUCT: Brainstorm Toys 2 in 1 Globe Earth and Constellations (www.brainstormltd.co.uk)Brainstorm Toys 2 in 1 globe

DESCRIPTION: A plastic globe that spins on an axis, and shows planet earth by day and constellations by night. Features include a light sensor that automatically turns the globe to the constellation night feature when dark. Requires 4 x C batteries (not included). The product is approximately 22.8cm in diameter. Information leaflet included. Suitable for children aged 8 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: Brainstorm have put a spin on the normal globe toy, with a 2 in 1 version that not only gives a 3d representation of Earth but after dark lights up to show a map of the stars and constellations.

The globe is plastic and has a sturdy feel to it, and the supporting arm that it rotates on is metal. The quality and finish are good, and the globe rotates very smoothly on its axis.

The globe of the Earth clearly depicts political boundaries (as they currently stand), and geographical features such as rivers, lakes and seas. All of the features are clearly labelled with capital cities marked for countries.

However when darkness falls, the globe automatically detects the changes in light intensity, thanks to an internal light sensor, and turns to its 'night mode' showing key stars and constellations, all of which are labelled with their latin and common names. This mode also doubles up as a comforting night light with the energy efficient LEDs using limited power. The night mode can also be turned off altogether using the on/off switch on the base of the stand.

The globe comes with a really educational leaflet that provides your child with some great facts about the earth and its constellations.

Globes are a great way of reinforcing various educational concepts and with the additional constellation maps the Brainstorm 2 in 1 Earth and Constellation Globe would provide a great deal of entertainment for any budding geographer or astronomer. Who knows where it might take them!

BAD POINTS: Batteries (rechargeable batteries can be used) are not included and neither is a power adaptor, although a compatible one (6v) can be purchased cheaply from a number of sources.
