PRODUCT: Eureka Toys Deep Space Home Planetarium and Projector ( Toys Deep Space Home Planetarium and Projector

DESCRIPTION: A table-top planetarium and projector with stand, including rotating star and constellation pattern projections, night light dome, high quality slide projector, 24 colour NASA images on 3 inter-changeable slide discs and educational colour booklet. Requires 3 x AA batteries (not included). Suitable for children aged 6 years upwards.

GOOD POINTS: The Deep Space Home Planetarium and Projector is an exciting and educational 'toy' for any child interested in all things space-related.

The product is surprisingly compact and consists of a cylindrical-shaped 'Deep Space' main unit which houses a projector on one end and a planetarium on the other. This unit comes supported on a small but sturdy stand, making it the perfect size for use on a table or shelf, and it can be rotated around on the stand to enable your child to interchange freely between projector and planetarium.

Batteries must be inserted into the Deep Space unit prior to initial use via the battery compartment on the side (a Philips screwdriver will be required for this), and the power switch located just above this compartment can be used to activate whichever of the unit's two main functions your child wishes to use.

The planetarium has two plastic black dome moulds, one patterned with stars and the other with constellations. The domes simply slot into place (one at a time) over the light bulb located on the respective end of the Deep Space unit, and on moving the power switch over to 'dome projector' the chosen dome will be projected onto your child's bedroom ceiling or wall, slowly rotating all the time it is on. This obviously has maximum effect in a darkened room, and the fact that the whole unit is portable and able to be rotated enables it to be repositioned as required to adjust/improve the focus. In addition, the product also includes a robust plastic blue dome-shaped cap which twists onto the end of the planetarium (over the black dome) and acts as a gentle night light.

The other end of the Deep Space unit contains a good quality slide projector which comes with three separate robust slide disks, each one containing eight wonderfully detailed colour NASA and Hubble Telescope photographic images of nebulae, spacecraft and astronauts, planets and the moon (twenty-four images in total). These slides are very easily to load, and are simply inserted one at a time into the designated slot on the side of the unit (ensuring the power switch is moved to 'disc projector'). Manually turning the slide round changes the photograph being projected. The projector can project the images quite clearly up to one metre wide onto walls and ceilings, and a useful twistable lens head adjusts the focus of the slide photographs.

The accompanying colour educational booklet which comes with the Deep Space Home Planetarium and Projector is certainly worth a mention. As well as including some useful instructions on use, the majority of the booklet contains some fascinating details for your child to absord about different constellations, along with background information about each of the twenty-four slide images.

Eureka Toys Deep Space Home Planetarium and ProjectorIn our opinion, this is a really innovative piece of kit for older children which is portable, educational and wonderfully fun, and its clever compact design takes up minimal space even in the smallest of bedrooms...a must-have learning resource for any night sky enthusiasts!

BAD POINTS: The planetarium projection images in particular are not excellent quality as the bulb is not powerful enough to project onto anything other than very close proximity walls or ceilings. This is a real shame as a more powerful light source would significantly improve this innovative learning tool. The product takes batteries which are not included in the price, and which also need replacing quite frequently with heavy use.
