GOOD POINTS: This is just one of the LEGO construction sets from the brilliant new Hobbit range which is timed to coincide with the forthcoming release of the second Hobbit film, and makes a superb gift for both LEGO collectors and fans of the classic book.

Fans will not be disappointed with the set, which allows your child to recreate fun scenes from the film using the characters to act it out...here Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield have washed up on the shores of Lake-town, and Bard the Bowman must sneak them on board his boat to help deliver them safely into town without them being discovered!

LEGO The Hobbit Lake-town ChaseThe set includes 470 pieces and the complexity of the build makes it a suitably exciting challenge for older children. There are three (mainly brown!) structures to build, including a house-cum-prison, an armoury and a boat. Everything is broken down into four numbered bags which are used to build up the separate components following the two very detailed instruction manuals provided.

The usual fantastic attention to detail is evident, with some great features thrown in. The house/prison features an authentic little prison room complete with prison key and fun 'breakout' wall, a guard house, as well as a lookout complete with working catapult!

The armoury features a cool weapons rack as well as a brilliantly designed secret passageway for the heroes to hide in. All the weapons are removable, and across the whole set include the magical Sting, a longbow, a corseque, a mace, a long sword and two short swords. In addition, a movable ladder crossing can be used to connect the armoury to the house.

The boat is just as impressive, including a second catapult for some fearsome battles, a steering oar, and a barrel to smuggle the characters.LEGO Hobbit figure

There are a number of fun accessories to add the finishing touches, including lamps, lattice windows, swinging signage, and of course, The One Ring! In addition, there are several stickers included to add some further fun detailing.

As usual the five characters included in the set excellently mimic those of the original scene from the film, with wonderfully detailed attire, hair pieces and double-sided faces. These include Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, Bard the Bowman, Master of Lake-town and a Lake-town Guard.

As with all of the LEGO kits, the pieces are very well made and will certainly ensure many generations of play! In our opinion, this is a first-class set to appeal to many an avid Hobbit fan...a fun build with some delightful features to maximise playability.

BAD POINTS: As with any larger LEGO kit, it is relatively expensive in comparison to other toys, however they will last (as long as you can keep all of the pieces in one place!). With extensive play it is possible that the stickers may eventually rub off.
