The tablet is now ready to use!
GOOD POINTS: The LeapPad2 Explorer is the latest technology from LeapFrog to keep your children fully entertained on those rainy days, whilst helping them learn without them knowing it!
Available in two child-friendly colours (green and mauve), the LeapPad2 is just the right size for small hands to manage, with a sturdy design to withstand a little rough treatment, and a decent sized screen for plenty of interactive fun. The control buttons are all on the front of the tablet, including a power button, volume control buttons, a D-pad and a 'Home' key. In addition, there is a built-in microphone in the bottom left-hand corner, plus two (front and rear) cameras for enabling your child to take pictures and record their own footage! The touch screen makes the menus easy to navigate for small hands and the menu system is easy to follow.
The apps that come with the 'Pad' are enough to keep your child entertained for a good while, although there are many more that can be purchased separately, either on cartridge or to download from an online library. Storage has been increased from the last version to 4 GB, allowing more media to be stored. The tablet has a clever 'tilt' feature which adds an extra depth of playability, and your child can also either work the apps with their finger, or using the stylus provided. This stylus is very handily attached to a colour-coordinated string for safe keeping and when not in use clips onto the side of the tablet.
The LeapPad2 comes with four default apps and allows one app of your (or your child's) choice to be downloaded and installed through the Leapfrog Connect. There is a library of over 200 games, videos, music, ebooks and more that can be purchased individually through the Leapfrog connect software or as standalone cartridges (including Spongebob Squarepants - The Clam Prix, Dora the Explorer - Dora's Worldwide Rescue and Disney Princess - Pop-Up Story Adventures) as your child progresses. Each of the apps and cartridges focuses on different learning skills from phonics through to social studies and culture providing a great way for children to learn in a fun interactive environment.
The Leapfrog Connect software also gives access to your child's "Learning Path" which tracks your childs abilities through monitoring their play on the different apps giving information about different learning skills (reading, spelling etc.) as they become more confident and practice to gain more skills.
The four apps included are:
Leapfrog Learning Songs - which teaches a number of songs that help children learn the alphabet, phonics and rhyming skills.
Pet Writing - a fun game that lets your child create their own pet that learns new tricks as your they learn to write the alphabet.
Cartoon Creativity - a great little app for budding producers that allows them to create short animated movies which can be customised using personal photos that have been taken on the LeapPad2 camera.
Art Studio - a simple drawing package that allows children to let their creative ideas run riot (without the usual mess!).
In our opinion, the LeapPad2 is a great way of entertaining children through a range of ages, with enough new content to keep them engaged whatever their capabilities!
BAD POINTS: The tablet is fairly expensive, and batteries must be purchased separately, along with additional apps which are not cheap. Does not come with screen protector, case or SD card.
